Pilates and yoga look calm from the outside and feel like hard work on the inside. Add a warm studio, a drive in the midday sun and a coffee after, and what you wear matters more than you'd think. Here's what to look for.
Pick fabric that breathes
Heavy, shiny synthetics can trap heat against your skin. Look for a soft knit that lets air through, so you stay comfortable during the session and on the way out. Soft, plant based fabrics like viscose from bamboo feel cooler to many people than thick polyester.
Choose a close fit, not a tight one
In Pilates, your instructor needs to see how your hips and spine are moving, so baggy clothes get in the way. Squeezing compression isn't necessary either. A close, comfortable fit stays in place when you roll down, lie on the mat or go upside down.
Check the waistband
A high rise waistband that sits flat is the difference between focusing on your breath and pulling your leggings up every five minutes. Try a few deep forward folds in the changing room before you commit.
Do the squat test
Stretch the fabric in good light. If you can see skin through it, it will be see-through in a deep lunge too. Denser knits and the right size solve this.
Think beyond the class
Most of us don't go straight home. If your set looks good at the café after, you'll wear it more, and every wear costs you less. Neutral colours and clean cuts do most of the work.
Our pick
The Set pairs our Sports Bra with high waisted Flare Leggings, made in soft viscose from bamboo with a little spandex. It's cut for the studio and comfortable enough to keep on for the rest of the day. Read more about the fabric.
